The Miseducation of Charisse Ghattas

I'm a 21 year old Marketing student at Virginia Tech. I like playing with colors, hula hooping at the beach, exploring social media, singing to 90s r&b, and the digital world of advertising. This is my blog.

“This is my grocery bag and I fill it at Chinkapin Hill Forest Farms” Print Ad Campaign

I’ve been meaning to post these for a while, but here are my concepts for my Advertising project this past semester. The client was Chinkapin Hill Forest Farms, a vendor at the Blacksburg Farmers Market. After doing extensive marketing research my team decided that the target market was too diverse to be narrowed down into one category. Since Farmer’s Market has so many different types of patrons we decided to advertise to all of them.

The target markets for these ads include:

  • Middle Class Parents (The only ad w/o filler text)
  • College Students
  • Blacksburg “Hippies”
  • Older Population

The ads also include a simplistic map in the bottom right corner of where to find CHFF at the Farmers Market. The final ad posted is to raise awareness of the canvas bag campaign we proposed in which customers could opt to pay a little extra for a reusable grocery bag with the Chinkapin Hill Forest Farm logo for all to see. Free advertising and supporting the environmentally friendly atmosphere of Blacksburg, VA.

Sorry for the bad quality photo. Cell phone pic!
This friday I went out with a friend of mine from Virginia Tech, Gino. Gino went into the Army after high school so he’s one of the older VT students I know. I got to meet a bunch of his friends, all of whom who have their own places & careers. I had a blast & most of all it made me really excited to jump start my life. I talked to all about them about their transition from college into careers. It really helped me get over being nervous about life after college. All this time I’ve spent being scared of “growing up” is gone & has been replaced by eagerness!
I’ve been looking more into advertising agencies, PR firms, etc. in the DC area recently. Going to keep going at it tonight as well. Let me know if you have any recommendations (Anywhere!)

Chicken & Rice!
This weekend I went to New York for FIND Dialogue, an annual event bringing together Filipino college students from all over the East Coast. After the conference, I got the chance to explore the city with some of my friends and alumni who now reside in Manhattan.
I had a blast in the city. It was the first time I’ve been to NYC without my family, so it was a whole new experience. My only wish is that I had the opportunity to meet with the vast multitude of advertising agencies and potential places to start my career. I definitely want to go up to NY again soon. A weekend just wasn’t enough.
PS.My friend Zoe & I made up a song about Chicken & Rice. Expect an audio post soon.

GNC Burn 60: Burn Bag (Click-Through Picture for Article)
I hope that there’s a GNC in the Blacksburg/Christiansburg area because I want that bag!
I feel like so many companies neglect the opportunity of creative advertising on shopping bags. You may have come across examples of that floating around on the internet, but I’ve almost never seen them in real life. Besides companies that have immediately recognizable bags, such as Bloomingdales and Forever 21, everyone should be doing this! It catches peoples eye while they’re already within the vicinity of the store! Hopefully one day I will work for a company that will let me design advertising shopping bags!

“The Show Goes On” by Lupe Fiasco

I’ve been playing this on repeat all morning while writing my Consumer Behavior paper. Modest Mouse meets Lupe Fiasco. I love it! I’ve been disappointed with a lot of Lupe’s new tracks, so this is like a breath of fresh air.

Rusko: He’s looking right at me!
This weekend there was a District 7 meeting for Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue in Richmond. I’m one of the D7 reps for Virginia Tech, so I drove up for the entire weekend to chill with Richmond kids.
Saturday night I went to see Rusko at the Canal Club. If you don’t know Rusko is a Dubstep DJ. The show was AMAZING & I had sooooo much fun. We didn’t get out of the club until 3:30 AM! If you know me personally, you know that I’ve been struggling with trying to decide whether or not I like Dubstep. I don’t know if I’m a believer just yet, but I’m looking forward to the next Dub show I go to!

Played with my hair last night while I was waiting for my roommate to get home.
Last night we saw Perpetual Groove at Awful Arthur’s in Blacksburg. The show was amazing & I met a lot of fun new people. It was my first time seeing P-Groove, but most of the crowd there knew all the words. If you haven’t seen them yet, I definitely suggest checking them out!
